Natural values in Upplandsbygd – NOW!

Upplandsbygd is running this project to strengthen ecosystem services – the benefits from nature – in our area. In this umbrella project, four participants have been selected and given the opportunity to receive 100,000 SEK in support to implement each of their sub-projects.

Registration is closed. Future opportunities for smaller sub-projects will be available, stay tuned. If you have an idea for a larger project (>50,000 SEK), you can download a concept sketch and send it to kansli@upplandsgbygd.se then we book a consultation:

About the project

Natural values in Upplandsbygd is one of our umbrella projects. In umbrella projects it is possible to seek support to implement sub-projects – this means less administration and faster decisions compared to running a project.

In this umbrella project, 4 participants have received support for various public benefit activities and investments that strengthen ecosystem services or knowledge about them in our area. Ecosystem services are all the different benefits we receive from nature.

Further down you can see which projects have been selected and some information about them. For example, you could receive support for restoring a water environment, establishing a demonstration farm, making a natural environment accessible for recreation, building a nutrient trap, or networking and increasing expertise around local food, or other ecosystem services.

Who was allowed to apply?

Organizations, such as companies and associations. It is an advantage if you collaborate with more organizations in other sectors.

Who has received support?

Applications were accepted continuously until the umbrella project's funding ran out. The deadline for applications was 31 October 2023. Four project owners and their partners have had their projects approved and are now starting implementation with approximately SEK 100,000 each. Everything from the establishment of a public forest garden and biodiversity initiatives to course and lecture activities and the preservation of culturally valuable natural sites.

Perennials and local water cycles on Hågaby urban farming
Subproject NU03

The project aims to convert existing annual crop beds into perennial vegetable beds to streamline the work process. It also includes evaluating how IBC tanks can be used for rainwater harvesting in cold winter climates and implementing water-saving techniques in combination with perennials to reduce water use. An educational component is planned where the public, school staff, parents and local allotments can participate in the construction process and discuss the project. In addition, perennial vegetables will be delivered to the school kitchen to work with the chefs to create a cookbook of nutritious and easy recipes for students.

Preserve Noor's apple orchard
Subproject NU06

In the apple grove of Noors Säteris outside Knivsta there is a culturally and historically important environment where about 100 old, gnarled apple trees create an environment with rich biodiversity. In order to preserve the grove for the future, we will begin pruning and caring for the trees within the project, inventorying varieties, setting up information materials and, together with the Nature School in Knivsta, organizing gatherings for the public.
