Before the project, preschools and schools could visit the 4H farm in Gränby for a food loop visit, but due to the farm's geographical location, the activity was more accessible to schools in the city than to schools in the countryside. Thanks to the project, 4H can now visit preschools and schools in the countryside with its mobile food cart and the farm's chickens in the tailgate.

The project has developed new educational materials to focus more on ecological and economic sustainability, such as resource management, climate and biodiversity linked to local food. They enlisted the help of an illustrator to create interactive books for the children, which they could write and paint in both during and after the visit.

During the cycle visits, children in preschool, primary and secondary school learn about food, the environment and natural cycles by growing crops, feeding chickens, picking eggs and baking muffins. The eggshells are saved and the children can use the shells as compost in their own small oat farm, and to close the circle, the children are later welcome back to the farm to feed the chickens with the home-grown oats.

Project manager Fanny estimates that they have made about 30 visits, for a total of around 400 participants. Visits have been made to schools and kindergartens, at local events such as village days, and on local farms. They have also planted trees and shrubs, and invited the children to talk about the function of trees for carbon sequestration, the climate and the carbon cycle. 

They have collaborated with some famous faces in Upplandsbygd, such as Thomas on FUB-Tallkrog and Elin on Bobrunna farm. When we talk to Fanny after the project, she explains that thanks to Elin and her farm, the children's trees and bushes could be partially planted at her place, as it quickly became difficult to find space for everything at 4H. We at the office think that this illustrates in a good way how problems can be solved by working together.
