From waste to resource – chipping in Skyttorp

The project is part of the umbrella project Richer Water and Landscape.

In Skyttorp, garden waste is transformed into a valuable resource. Through local chipping, they reduce emissions, improve soils and create community, all with the help of a shared chipper.

About the project

In the project From waste to resource The Skyttorps forest garden association wants to reduce climate impact by using rice and branches from gardens in the village, instead of burning them or taking them to the recycling center. By chipping the material locally, the carbon can be stored longer in the soil, while also becoming a valuable resource for cultivation.

Wood chips work great as mulch in gardens and orchards. They reduce evaporation, improve soil structure and contribute to carbon sequestration. For households in Skyttorp, this means better compost, finer soils and more attractive ground cover, all without having to buy materials or haul away garden waste.

A wood chipper will be purchased and maintained by the association together with Henny's tree service and it will be available to local residents who want to use it themselves or leave their rice to the forest garden. In this way, both time, money and environmental resources are saved. The project also includes a workshop where participants will learn how to use the wood chipper safely, as well as gain knowledge about soil health and water conservation. The collaboration with local actors, such as Henny's tree service, strengthens both entrepreneurship and community.

In the long term, the project contributes to a more sustainable village community, where waste is seen as a resource and where sharing equipment and knowledge becomes a natural part of everyday life.

Project manager Elin has run several projects with us, both at Bobrunna farm and in the nearby community of Skyttorp. Read more about her various projects here:
