We are very happy when local organizations that run projects with Upplandsbygd update us and tell us how things are going, especially when things are going well!
Today we saw a very nice post from Östhammar Municipality, which has been granted support to run a project with a focus on strengthening ecosystem services and creating a meeting place with learning initiatives. Briefly about the project: In the Källör area of central Östhammar, Östhammar Municipality has initiated several measures to promote biodiversity in the form of a ”pollinator park” on a meadow. The project’s measures aim to enhance the experience and attractiveness along a well-known promenade along the water, by letting the grass grow high on the green area, sowing meadow flowers, installing birdhouses and signage in combination with other activities taking place on site, such as the annual hay festival, opening up the opportunity for the public, preschools and schools to learn about the local ecosystem on site. Recently, they have started a project where, among others, the Källör Rural Community Association, the municipality and Logården preschool have helped to sow meadow flowers and build a log wall that can serve as a habitat for many insects. Cooperation between local actors is important to ensure a bottom-up perspective and local adaptation that increases the public benefit of the projects. Upplandsbygd sets specific requirements and advises applicants to make this happen. The projects must be implemented in cooperation between at least two local organizations from different sectors (public, private and non-profit sectors). By focusing on cooperation, we also strive to strengthen the local projects and ensure that the benefits remain and grow after the project ends.
When local organizations work together and create dialogue, it can also promote increased community engagement and the spread of knowledge and inspiration. To achieve sustainable transition through locally led development, we strive to integrate both ”hard”, measurable values – such as environmental and economic aspects including emissions, biodiversity, consumption and technological development – and soft values such as community engagement, preservation of local traditions and knowledge, well-being, trust, transparency, etc. This is necessary to create a more sustainable future.
