Scythe party at Spökbacken, Söderön

Söderön's local history association is celebrating 25 years and is planning a festive and educational mowing festival in the summer of 2026. The aim is to arouse interest in scythe mowing and show how traditional meadow management benefits biodiversity and sustainable development.

During the day, visitors will be able to try out scythe mowing, see mowing with workhorses, join guided nature tours and build insect hotels. Older tools and implements will also be on display, to increase understanding of what historical management looked like. 

If all goes as planned, the Söderön local history association hopes to create an annual tradition that attracts both locals, holidaymakers and visitors. The lie-mows at Spökbacken will make use of areas that are not accessible to machines, which will improve land use. Knowledge about species and nature conservation will hopefully inspire participants to want to preserve their local environment. An annual mow festival will also create a new meeting place for the residents of Söderön, where they can come together and do something good, while exchanging experiences and knowledge.

The Slattergillet will be a day of community, learning and nature experiences, and is a great example of how to create initiatives for sustainable development locally.
