Grow in your garden – food preparation in Hagundabygden
The project is part of the umbrella project Richer Water and Landscape.
Uppsala Red Cross Society is implementing an initiative in Hagunda to strengthen local food security through small-scale farming close to home. By spreading knowledge about how to grow and use fruit, berries and vegetables, the project wants to inspire more people to grow their own, preserve farming traditions and increase self-sufficiency in the countryside.
About the project
By spreading knowledge about gardening and balcony cultivation, along with traditional storage methods, the project aims to increase residents' ability to cope in situations with limited access to electricity, transportation or food. The project combines sustainability and preparedness by highlighting local farming traditions, promoting biodiversity and inspiring people to grow where they live. By drawing on experiences from home-grown farming and preservation, a valuable exchange of knowledge is created between generations.
Through meetings, garden days and information efforts, the project aims to provide practical tools for emergency cultivation and harvest storage. At the same time, cultivable land and underground cellars are mapped, and contacts are made with volunteers and local actors who want to contribute. Collaboration with grower associations, companies and Uppsala Municipality is an important part, both in strengthening local food security and in supporting the municipality's rural strategy for increased village cultivation. The long-term goal is for the countryside to become more resilient, where more people can cultivate and use their harvest, and for the project to become a source of inspiration that spreads knowledge and commitment to more locations.
