From ear of corn to loaf – a food preparedness project in Hagunda Red Cross group
Uppsala Red Cross Society is starting an initiative in Hagunda to spark interest in the old craft of baking in bakers' cottages, while strengthening common preparedness. By spreading knowledge about baking without electricity, cultural grains and local food production, the project wants to connect tradition, sustainability and community across generations.
About the project
The project aims to strengthen local food security by spreading knowledge about baking without electricity and by promoting cultural grains and traditional baking techniques. By inventorying bakers' cottages and training more people in the craft, these meeting places can be brought to life and become resources in both everyday life and in crises. The collaboration between Uppsala Municipality, experienced bakers, local growers and volunteers is central to promoting sustainable food production and biodiversity. The project also aims to create meetings between generations where older people share their experience and younger people.
More specifically, baking courses, training courses and open activities are being arranged where participants can try baking in bakeries and learn practical skills for preparedness. At the same time, local bakeries are being mapped and collaborations with grain growers and small artisanal mills are being developed to strengthen the local food chain. The goal is to build a model for sustainable preparedness that inspires more people, where community, knowledge and local commitment become the foundation for a more resilient society.
