🌿 Österbybruk Fishing Association Wins the Challenge for a Sustainable Investment in a Nature Conservation Area 🌿

We at Upplandsbygd have recently announced an exciting challenge for investments in or adjacent to nature conservation areas, with a focus on promoting sustainable tourism. After many committed applications, we are pleased to announce that Österbybruk Fiskeri Förening has been selected as the winner.

Österbybruk Fishing Association says the following: ”"”Since our inception in the 1930s, our association's statutes have included the care and preservation of Stordammen and its surrounding environment, primarily with a focus on fishing. Today, we consist of around a hundred association members. Our goal with the investment is to maintain the water level of Stordammen and maintain the dam so that it does not grow back. We have noticed that interest is increasing greatly when it comes to activities on the lake during all seasons.”

The Winning Idea: Stordammens Preservation and Sustainable Tourism

Österbybruk Fiskeri Förening plans to maintain the water level of Stordammen by purchasing a reed and water lily cutting unit for an existing boat. This investment also enables the purchase of boats for rental, which is the first step in increasing the use of the dam and its tributaries for residents and visitors.

The association is also involved in nature and fisheries conservation by removing small trees near the shore and using them to make fish vases. These measures are carefully designed to preserve and enhance the ecological values of the ponds and strengthen the attractiveness of the area as a place to live and visit.

Why This Investment Makes a Difference:

1. Conservation of the Water Environment: By cutting reeds in the pond's bays and areas, attractive habitats are created for amphibians, fish and birds, which increases biodiversity.

2. Reduced Nutrient Leakage and Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Cutting reeds reduces nutrient leaching and greenhouse gas emissions, which promotes a healthier aquatic environment and strengthens the fight against climate change.

3. Creating Variation in the Waterscape: By carrying out the cutting in a differentiated manner, different environments are created for different species, which benefits the overall ecological balance.

4. Improved Shoreline for Ground Vegetation: By removing spruce from the shoreline, better conditions are created for deciduous trees and ground vegetation, which benefits more species and increases the overall attractiveness.

5. Strengthening the Tourism Industry and Cultural Heritage: An open body of water creates attractiveness and makes cultural heritage visible and accessible. Fishing, swimming, boating, hiking and recreation are encouraged, which in turn increases the number of visitors to camping and other activities in the area.

With this idea, Österbybruk Fiskeri Förening has shown a strong commitment to sustainability, conservation of natural values and promotion of local tourism. Their work will not only benefit the natural ecosystems around the dams but also strengthen the community and attractiveness of Österbybruk as a vibrant and sustainable destination. We look forward to following their progress and wish them good luck with the implementation of this significant investment! 🌍💙
